Michael is right on this... ...there are lots of reasons to leave
the 'pioneers' to be proud of their 440 pioneering for the next
quarter-century and head for 1.2Ghz. For that is the land where
cellular systems begin to make sense, where antennas are tiny, and
where, thanks to Motorola et. al. generating a bit of RF is no
longer a major feat.

Heck the SoCal market alone could drive the price of 1.2Ghz rigs
through the floor.

And the Jay Maynards of this world can search out a good 75meter/440Mhz
all-mode transceiver, to fit their world-view.

Randy, a schematic diagram won't do you any good.  That unit has many
modules all interconnected, and it's far from being a simple unit to
service.  I used to own one, and finally sold it.

I do have a copy of the service manual that I'd be willing to part
with, but I'd be more interested in buying the radio from you so I
could play with it and possibly get it working.

I used to have a repair shop and did Midland warranty work, so I may
be able to get it working.  You can reach me at 818-894-2887 (I am

To one and all!  Finally we are back online!  It only took me and my new
Co-Sysop Bob Ward three weeks to figure out that one simple little glitch
was
holding us up, but we even added a new Internet UUCP interface to the BBS
in the process.

The Disney Software BBS is now back on FIDOnet full time, as well as the
Internet!

Internet users can write to us directly here at Disney Software via our
state of the art 8 line BBS at the Intenret ID - [e-mail].

Messages will come straight into our BBS and be answered directly by our
staff!
We are also participating in the rec.arts.disney newsgroup too!  It is
available on the BBS as well!

Fidonet users can still reach us at node ID 1:102/841.0 as always, and we
will
have a new Nodelist entry shortly which will allow systems to do File
Requests
from us again!  We have plenty of files to choose from!

Our Front Door system is online 24 hours a day and has a line dedicated to
it,
so pesky busy signals should be minmized!

Members of the Disney conference on FIDO will be happy to know that I will
finally be resuming my duties as Moderator of the echo.  The three week
delay
in doing so was caused by the BBS pooping out on us again, but now it is
going strong and we can get back to work!

Until Chris Harrower returns to Moderator duties I will be handling it.  I
will be posting new rules in a few days after they get typed up.  I have
been
watching what's been going on and Steven Soria has been handling it nicely
in my absence.

I would also like to state that the echo will be back to it's normal status
within two weeks.  I am in contact with Chris Harrower and we are
straightening
out that little problem.

Well, enough of that!  Back to reading!

Subject: Near new Cushcraft R-5 antenna for sale

This antenna was only installed 2 weeks before my neighbor convinced me to
take it down.

It's a Cushcraft R-5 vertical half-wave antenna, and covers 10, 12, 15, 17,
and 20 meters.  I've used it successfully on 40 meters with my antenna
tuner, though most antenna tuners would admittedly allow you to tune up
your bedframe.

Best offer of around $200 takes it.  It's back in it's original packing and
complete with all the original paperwork including blank warranty cards.

Subject: Punch card settings for Hickok tube tester.

I have the use of a Hickok KS-15874-L2 vacuum tube tester.  It
uses plastic punch cards to adjust the settings for each tube
type.  The tester I have has no punch cards for the very old tubes
I want to test, e.g. 24, 26, 27, 80, 71A.  Does anyone out there
already know the proper settings (electronic) or puch holes for
these vacuum tubes?  I will be getting a manual for the tester
soon, but it is not in hand yet.  The tester does have blank
cards and a punch tool.  Thanks for any help.

One wonders where the art of communication has gone?  Over the past
week I read an interesting bulletin edited by Helmut, DL2BR on Pactor
Link-Errors.  When using the mode one may see several operational
errors.  Most of those are caused by a lack of knowledge of the
protocol.  Some errors arise by misunderstanding the possibilities of
Pactor.  But a few operators ignore existing connects too.  Fortunatly
the last mentioned are really a small minority.

SAINT PIERRE & MIQUELON, FP.  FP/KA1NCN will be active on CW, SSB and
RTTY from 160-10 meters from July 19-25.  He will participate in the
IOTA-contest.  QSL via AA1AS.

LIBYA, 5A.  There are rumors for a planned operation in Libya by a
Japanese group led by Ajiro, JA2JPA.  No official date is known.  The
operation has a United Nations agency sponsorship.

BHUTAN, A5.  There are still hopes for a possible operation by Jim
Smith, VK9NS from this place.  Actually he is waiting for new
permission from the Bhutanese authorities.

SVALBARD, JW.  Tom, LA4LN and and Magne, LB3RC will be active as JW4LN
and LB3RC/JW from August 1-20.  They will use all bands from 160-10
mtrs including WARC on CW, SSB and digital modes.  QSL direct only to

Is this true? No open system  places limits upon its users?
I thought the court case in SoCal was about the owners of an open repeater
trying to prevent two people from using it.

We can say that when an owner shuts down an open machine due to say, jamming, he
*is* placing a limit on who he wants and doesn't want to us it.

We can even say that a PL'd open repeater is placing a limit on its
users.



I wonder what you folks would do if there were suddenly no repeaters? You are
so hopelesssly dependent upon someone else's radio (i.e., repeater) that you
would probably see your own radio as worthless (as someone has already
stated because he can't work any of the 440 closed repeaters).

How sad.

One of the first things I did when I got my first 2M radio (in 1976 - it
was a Clegg FM-27 - the very first synthesized 2M rig) was play on
146.76 - it was a simplex frequency back then. Simplex in the Valley
was very entertaining.
